Delaine Nelson, owner of Neon Cactus Wines, the first and still the best wine store in Cochrane, Alberta, started the business as a full-scale liquor store offering fine products and superior service to the Cochrane community in 1998. (Check out these pictures of the original store under construction.) In the spring of 2002, she decided to downsize the store and create a specialty wine boutique catering to a larger town with an increasingly varied population.
Neon Cactus Wines has a lot of happy customers in Cochrane. They come in to taste and to browse. Regular customers expect to find new wine treasures every week and newcomers are usually surprised and delighted by the selection. Some customers order by the case to take advantage of a particular vintage while it is available, or just to enjoy the discount. They also like having their Frequent Purchase Card stamped and redeeming it for a free bottle of wine.
Neon Cactus Wines provides ample quantities of high-quality products for all kinds of special events in Cochrane. The guidance and advice provided by Delaine and her staff are valuable services that Cochrane residents rely on.
On July 3, 2010, Neon Cactus Wines contributed to the Cochrane community by sponsoring the Calgary Stampede Caravan Pancake Breakfast, along with the other merchants in Points West Mall. Check out the pictures to get an idea about what a wonderful event it was, and it was all free for the many happy attendees.
The store has been a big part of Cochrane’s Robbie Burns Day for many years now. On January 23, 2010, Neon Cactus Wines held a scotch tasting at the Cochrane Men of Vision Pipes and Drums Robbie Burns Night for the eleventh consecutive year. For a minimal charge to support the Band, attendees could try a wee dram of an amazing variety of scotches from Scotland and even a single malt whisky from India. View pictures of the event.
The variety of scotches available at Neon Cactus Wines is very impressive ~ approximately 40 kinds at present ~ and the selection is continuously changing. (Click on Scotch in the list at the right to read about some of the scotch in stock.) Just ask and we’ll do our best to stock your favourite scotch, just as we do with wine.
On the evening of October 3, 2009, Neon Cactus Wines successfully presented the second annual Cochrane Winefest (view photos), held at GlenEagles Golf Club. Tickets were $50 per person. Attendees received a complimentary wine goblet and had the opportunity to taste 100 different wines, and also scotch. There were a wide variety of hot and cold hors d’oeuvres on offer. Feedback about the event from those who attended was unanimously positive. Neon Cactus Wines has made this an annual event, eagerly anticipated by wine lovers.
