Barbera d’Alba Bricco dei Merli DOC ~ Italy

A typically Piedmontese wine, well-structured and good for ageing, in which wood and fruit blend to maintain the characteristics and typicality of the Barbera grape varietal intact. True to Cogno tradition, its principal qualities are its quaffability and freshness.
Bright ruby red in colour with clear crimson highlights. Deep, full perfumes, elegant, well-balanced and enduring, reminiscent of rose, undergrowth and oriental spices. Very powerful bouquet, sweetened by overall softness. Fine structure accompanied by lively acidic freshness. Flavours conjure up morello cherry and plum jam with a long finish of withered grape. Serve with tasty dishes such as pasta and red meat, medium-mature soft, fatty cheeses. $34.95*

The Seventy Five Wine Company was founded to perpetuate and honour the landmark year of 1975, when many inspirational events occurred. To name but a few: Bill Gates founded Microsoft, Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace, the first episode of Saturday Night Live debuted, and the Beckstoffer family set up shop in Napa Valley.

The Seventy-Five Wine Company Cabernet Sauvignon
This wine possesses extraordinary power and depth of fruit that combine to create a wine of monumental richness. Notes of blueberry and fresh ripe cherries are interwoven with subtle graphite and toasty oak. Incredibly fragrant and beautifully concentrated, all the while maintaining great acidity and a wonderful long seamless finish. This wine is certainly approachable now and should age beautifully. $26.95*

The Sum
This amazingly well-endowed, profoundly rich Cabernet-based, blended red must be smelled and tasted to be believed. The colour is a rich, deep purple garnet and gives but a small hint as to what’s inside. The nose gives off soaring and wonderfully focused aromas of ripe stone fruit, vanilla, cherries, cedar cigar box, blackberries and cinnamon. In the mouth, there are layers upon layers of broad, sweet opulent fruit balanced by firm tannins, great acidity and oak. $32.95*

Quinta do Judeu “Manuel do Talho” ~ Douro, Portugal

This wine honours Manuel do Talho, a fantastic storyteller, who became known for his capacity to accurately identify, by blind test, any wine from the Douro region. The Quinta do Judeu winery, owned by the Carvalho family since 1932, is named for an ancient Roman statue located on the estate. The winery was born out of a passion to produce Douro wine of an expressive, emerging style.
This is a red blend of four Portuguese grape varietals. Bright berry fruit nose with a fresh, spicy character. The palate shows bright fruit bolstered by subtly medicinal spiciness and good acidity. It’s fresh and a tiny bit rustic. $26.95*

Most people think Argentina when they see Malbec, but it now has found an ideal home in the Lodi region, known for its climate of warm, dry summers amid rich fertile soil that creates the perfect place to grow award-winning Malbecs.
These grapes have similar characteristics to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and are oftentimes rich but delicate. This vintage’s heady aroma of juicy, ripe fruit is what you notice first. Think of ripe, red cherries, plums and luscious currants. The flavours complement the nose with rich, ripe fruit overlapped by spicy cherry and hints of sweet oak. Medium-bodied with mature tannins, this wine has a savoury feel to it. Pair with any red meat dish but can also go great with Mexican, Indian or Italian fare. $28.95*
