Come to Neon Cactus Wines for a bottle of
Quinta do Ameal Vinho Verde from Portugal.
Laurie McKay tasted and talked about this wine on House Wine on CBC radio’s Homestretch on Friday, May 22, 2009
Vinho Verde means “Green Wine” in reference to its youthful freshness, not its colour. A vinho verde usually has lower alcohol content and is meant for immediate consumption.
Produced in the Refóios region, where the Loureiro grape variety is at its most aromatic and tasty, the Quinta do Ameal Vinho Verde is delicate, fresh, clear, light-coloured white wine. It possesses a good combination of floral and fruity aromas, typical of well-ripened grapes. Excellent body and acidity balance, a smooth yet slightly crisp taste, a fruity palate and persistent length. Superb as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to meals. This wine is perfect with oriental cuisine. $19.95*
Come to Neon Cactus Wines for a bottle of Terasses.

70% Grenache, 30% Syrah
The word comes from the Latin terras, meaning “lump of earth.” Paul and Edith Chaudière chose this name in homage to the Provence countryside terraces their ancestors carved into carefully chosen, well-protected, sunny locations.
This unfiltered wine is a dark red colour. The nose blossoms into jammy berry aromas set off by a touch of spice. A medium- to full-bodied wine with a powerful mouthfeel and elegant, unctuous tannins, it is enhanced by very round cherry and black current notes finishing with spicy flavours. Ideal with terrines, poultry, roasted or grilled meats, mushroom pies, and stuffed baby vegetables. $16.95*
[ Chateau Pesquie, Cotes du Ventoux ]
Ruby red, with intense aromas and good structure. An extraordinarily well-balanced, elegant wine. On the nose it is rich in ripe fruit and on the palate it is pleasantly easy to drink, harmonious and tasty. This red is suitable for serving with the widest range of dishes. $19.95*
[ Italian Piedmont ]
Purple-red colour with aromas and flavours of blackberry, blueberry, flowers, nutmeg, cassia spice, bacon and hints of sage. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and tart, with moderate dry tannins. Incredibly jammy berries, pepper and cassia spice flavours resonate in the well-balanced lengthy finish. If you love big, explosive New World wine, this is going to please. Smooth and delicious. $17.95*
The story behind the name: In true Aussie spirit, strong local football rivalry exists among the three towns neighbouring the Eskadale vineyard. Each year, the winning team earns the right to paint the old water tank at the vineyard with their team colours: The Winner’s Tank.
Medium straw in color, a slight note of citrus backs bold, ripe peach and pear aromas. Round and viscous, the predominat flavour is peach. The wine has good acidity, and the finish is clean and soft. Delicious! $17.95*

Why the name Hermit Crab? 1) The vineyards sit on limestone formed by the remains of prehistoric sea creatures, one of which was the hermit crab. 2) This wine is best enjoyed with shellfish and seafood dishes. 3) “Hermit” is the abbreviation for the region in France where the Marsanne grape predominates. This wine is vibrantly fresh with enjoyable hints of hazelnut and slight mineral characteristic of the Marsanne. Experience fruit aromas with an emphasis on stone fruits, pineapple, mango and honeysuckle. The youthful palate is immediately luscious with those tropical fruit, honeysuckle and stone fruit flavours balanced by fresh grapefruit and light butter tastes before a long persistent fruity finish. $19.95*
